The Next Gen Tarot is here.
I created the Next Gen Tarot to translate the Tarot and hold it to today’s standards. For me, that meant challenging gender roles, norms of sexuality and gender alignment. The major arcana comprises of a mixture of genders, including non-binary, as well as different sexual orientations. I have also placed some females in traditionally male roles and challenged what it is to be masculine and feminine.
The Displacement Tarot
The Displacement Tarot is a continuation of my last Next Gen Tarot project but with a focus on inclusion of displaced humans and a wider variety of skin tones to add to those already represented in my last deck.
The Major Arcana comprises of a mixture of genders, including non-binary, as well as different sexual orientations. I have also placed some females in traditionally male roles and challenged what it is to be masculine and feminine. This Major Arcana includes people of mixed race, Indian, Caribbean, Latina, Filippino-mix, Lebanese-Scottish, Native American, Indian-American, Jamaican-mixed, Indian-Scottish, Vietnamese, African-American, Portuguese-American, Korean, Romani-descent… some are displaced in their own country by other races, some are displaced by being in a different country than they were born in, or that their ancestors are from, some feel displaced in their own culture owing to their queerness, some are displaced in their own bodies and undergo transition to blossom into the gender they are supposed to be.
The Major Arcana include flowers and their meanings, such as Protea for The Wheel of Fortune, which is about transition. The Protea flower represents Transformation, Courage, Daring, Diversity. The lotus is used for Death, illustrating that the Death card is about rebirth.
